Keep CHASS around In the September 30 edition of Technician on page 4 under the column heading "In Your Words," this question appears: "Why should the University, with its strong engineering, veterinary and agricultural programs, keep CHASS around?" I watch a lot of late night talk shows and other shows that use current events as comedic material, and much of the commentary has understandably been about the upcoming presidential elections. Most of their political jokes have been about Republican presidential candidate John McCain's age, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's racial identity and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter.

University not handling budget reductions properly An article in the Oct. 2 Technician quotes senior officials in the Provost's Office on strategies for dealing with a reduction in state funding. We all agree on the need for wise decisions. For this to happen, however, we must have administrators who are accomplished in their own scholarship, appreciate fundamental principles of higher education, comprehend the practices at top tier universities and truthfully represent the issues - to the university community, to the legislature and to the public.
